EXHIBITIONS

Rich Text

Exhibit your works at our dedicated gallery space. Exhibitions change on a monthly basis.

The Phoenix Cinema Trust provides a small community gallery space to enable local artists to show their work in an appreciative environment.

The gallery is intended to display 2D work: paintings, photographs, prints etc. Should artists wish to exhibit other items, such as sculpture or video work, this may be arranged upon individual discussion.

Exhibiting your work

Display periods are allotted on a calendar month basis on a date agreed with the curator. Proposals are accepted all year round. You can send in a proposal to art@phoenixcinema.co.uk

To cover the running costs of the gallery, we require a £70 +VAT administration fee for each exhibition. This payment will act as a slot booking guarantee.

Work must be brought to the cinema strung reasonably tightly across the back in the upper third of each frame, ready to be hung from a single, centrally positioned hook. If this hanging method is hard to apply to the work's specific format, alternative arrangements are to be discussed with the space curator, at the time of making the booking.

Sales and commission

Should artists make any sales of their work whilst they are hung in the cinema, the cinema retains a 40% commission fee.  Sales must be arranged through the cinema, which is discussed before the show opening date.

Once your exhibition has been taken down, you will be required to invoice Phoenix Cinema Trust Ltd for the value of any work sold (minus commission), including the details of the bank account to which you would like the payment to be made.

The cinema is not insured for any loss or damage to the art, therefore work is exhibited at the artist’s own risk and we recommend that artists take out their own insurance. We advise against exhibiting work that is valued at more than £500 per piece. We have never yet suffered theft or significant damage from our gallery space.

CURRENT AND FORTHCOMING EXHIBITIONS

JULY - MID AUGUST 2024: INK COLLECTIVE

INK COLLECTIVE is a group of artists/printmakers living and working in North London.

Printmaking as an art form has a mighty pedigree in the woodcuts and etchings of Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt, Helen Frankenthaler and Paula Rego, and remains a perfect medium for exploring the patterns and textures of our lives. The fluid rhythms of sky and water; the sharp lines of urban grids and architecture; the roughness of brick and stone; the intricate structures of plant and insect; the soft contours of faces and bodies - all might be seen and explored, and find their way into the artwork.

Each printmaker in INK COLLECTIVE has an individual approach to creating their prints, combining old and new techniques, using modern or traditional tools, employing heavy presses or no press at all.

The works in this show embrace many techniques including monotype, etching, linocut, collage, photoetching, photo polymer etching, embossing, a la poupee, and chine colle - all celebrate this engrossing and addicting art form as it continues to evolve from its traditional origins.

PAST EXHIBITIONS

FEBRUARY 2024: NADIA SAVVOPOULOU - "FOR THE LOVE OF CINEMA"

Nadia Savvopoulou – aka Archnote – is a photographer, a RIBA Chartered Architect, and a designer with a passion for the arts and creative media. Nadia is also member of the East Finchley Open Artists and an illustrator for the Highgate Society.

"From absurd, experimental worlds to ones filled with adventure and fantasy, this series of drawings captures those moments when each of these movies or TV series left a lasting impression on me. I love cinema and always choose a place with some unique atmosphere to watch movies. I also love watching films online and often compare the choice I have to make between watching something at home or on the cinema screen as the choice between buying a music album in digital format or on vinyl. Whether the drawings depict actual scenes from the movies or ones that are products of my imagination, a strong desire to capture something from the unique energy of these films has led me to these illustrations. I have used a different type of paper for each drawing in terms of weight, colour, and texture. This had something to do with the overall aesthetic of each film and how this registered on me. There are very rough, heavily textured papers as well as others with subtle patterns on them. I am fascinated by the way a scene comes alive from the surface it is drawn on and hope that this too will influence the way these drawings are received. For this series, I have used a combination of black and sepia ink, pigments, pencil, charcoal, and some black acrylic paint. The frames are made using old film negatives which I developed using abrasive material."

MARCH 2024: DAN CASEY - "OUT OF SEASON"

Dan Casey Is a London based photographer.  Although primarily interested in portrait and social documentary photography here is a rare chance to see his 2009 “Out Of Season” project once again.

The “Out of Season” project came about in December 2009, when, in an attempt to de-stress after a hard couple of weeks , Dan and his girlfriend decided to throw a few rolls of film into a bag and drive to the coast.  To this day, the project is the only project Dan has done that does not contain portraits but after having the films scanned and printed on their return to London, Dan feels the bleakness of the images reflects the moods and emotions he was experiencing at that time.
